Matamata is a rural town in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island, with a population of approximately 9,540 as of June 2025. It is globally famous as the home of the Hobbiton Movie Set, but it also serves as a major hub for dairy farming and thoroughbred horse breeding.
